NEET UG 2025 to Be Held Offline: NTA’s Decision Follows CBI Action on Impersonation Case!

The NEET UG 2025 exam pattern remains unchanged, while the CBI has filed a new case regarding alleged impersonation by four NEET-UG 2024 candidates in Bihar's Purnia.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET UG 2025) will follow an OMR-based pen-and-paper format, conducted in a single day and single shift. This announcement came a day after the CBI filed a fresh case against eight individuals for alleged impersonation.

Key Highlights of the NEET UG 2025 Notification:

  1. Exam Mode and Schedule:
    • NEET UG 2025 will be conducted in pen-and-paper mode (OMR-based).
    • The exam will take place in a single day and single shift.
  2. History of Challenges:
    • NEET UG has faced opposition since its inception.
    • Last year’s exam saw multiple allegations of paper leaks, impersonation, irregularities, and malpractices.
    • The Supreme Court directed the Ministry of Education to address these issues.
  3. Supreme Court Intervention:
    • Despite the reported issues, the apex court did not cancel the exam.
    • It mandated the creation of a high-level expert committee to propose reforms for NTA-conducted exams.
  4. Expert Committee Report:
    • The 7-member panel, led by former ISRO chairperson K. Radhakrishnan, submitted its report in December.
    • Recommendations included:
      • Conducting NEET UG in multiple shifts and sessions.
      • Introducing an age limit and limiting the number of attempts.
  5. Shift in NTA’s Role:
    • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced a significant change in NTA’s responsibilities.
    • NTA will now focus solely on conducting college entrance exams and will no longer handle recruitment exams.

NEET Irregularities: CBI Files Fresh Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a new case concerning alleged impersonation by four NEET-UG 2024 candidates from Bihar’s Purnea, officials confirmed to PTI. The investigation was transferred to the CBI following a request by the Bihar government.

According to the FIR, the principal of SRDAV Public School, a NEET exam center in Purnea, reported that biometric records revealed four impersonators took the exam in place of genuine candidates during the May 5, 2024, test.

The alleged impersonators identified in the FIR include:

  • Nitish Kumar of Bhojpur, who appeared for Ashish Kumar of Muzaffarpur.
  • Kamlesh Kumar of Jalore (Rajasthan), who appeared for Dheeraj Prakash of Siwan.
  • Saurabh Kumar of Begusarai, who appeared for Tathaghat Kumar of Sitamarhi.
  • Mayank Chaudhary of Sitamarhi, who appeared for Deepak Kumar Singh of Muzaffarpur.

All eight individuals have been booked for alleged offenses such as impersonation, cheating, and forgery.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is an entrance examination for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical courses in government and private institutions. On May 5, 2024, more than 23 lakh aspirants appeared at 4,750 centers across 571 cities, including 14 international locations.
