New Delhi: On December 30, the National Testing Agency (NTA) released an online notice about the NEET-UG exam syllabus. Instead of providing a new link, the agency redirected users to the existing syllabus bulletin. This decision has drawn attention as no further updates have been provided. NTA has announced that the NEET-UG 2025 application form dates are expected to begin soon. Candidates are advised to prepare their documents and ensure that details, particularly Aadhaar information, are accurate and up-to-date to avoid issues during the registration process.
Concerns Over Delayed NEET-UG Registration
The delay in NEET-UG registration has raised concerns about NTA’s credibility. Officials from the Education Ministry expressed apprehensions, stating that prolonged delays might impact the transparency and efficiency of the agency. They emphasized that such delays could hinder the smooth conduct of exams and reveal operational shortcomings.
Past Year Registration and Exam Trends
Traditionally, NEET-UG registrations began in November, with exams scheduled for May. In 2025, with January half over, the registration process is yet to commence, leaving students in uncertainty.
NTA released the NEET-UG syllabus on December 30, 2024, and issued another notification on January 15, 2025, mandating the use of Apaar IDs to enhance exam transparency. Despite these updates, registration dates remain unannounced. Over 24 lakh students registered for NEET UG in 2024, including more than 10 lakh male and female students, along with 24 third-gender candidates. For 2025, the number of registrants is expected to range between 24 to 30 lakh. Delays in registration could disrupt students’ exam preparations.
Impact on Candidates’ Exam Preparation
Students preparing for NEET UG are simultaneously managing other academic commitments, such as board exams and JEE. The lack of clarity on registration and exam dates is creating stress and affecting their performance. Experts, including NEET-IIT Academy Director Shubham Roy, highlighted that delays prolong confusion and negatively impact candidates’ focus.
NEET UG 2025 Exam Mode and Transparency
On January 16, 2025, NTA confirmed that the exam would be conducted in pen-paper mode. This decision follows the 2024 paper leak incident and discussions on transitioning to a computer-based format. A high-level committee chaired by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan recommended an online format for improved transparency. However, NTA chose to retain the traditional mode due to logistical challenges.
Challenges of Conducting a Large-Scale Pen-Paper Exam
With an anticipated candidate pool exceeding 25 lakh, conducting the exam in pen-paper mode poses logistical hurdles. Experts noted that it is challenging to manage security and allocate centers efficiently for such a large-scale event.
Expert Opinions on Transitioning to Online Mode
While an online format offers transparency, experts argue that it requires significant preparation. Urban candidates with computer familiarity may have an advantage over rural counterparts, highlighting the need for equitable exam strategies. NTA has not indicated plans for an immediate transition to online mode.
Official Statement on Registration and Exam Dates
NTA has not yet announced registration dates but is expected to release updates in early February. Officials stressed the importance of timely registration to ensure smooth exam preparations and maintain candidates’ trust. NTA must address the delays and operational concerns promptly to safeguard its credibility. Clear communication and timely announcements will be critical in ensuring a transparent and efficient examination process for the record number of candidates expected in 2025.
