New Delhi: NMC chairman Dr BN Gangadhar responded to concerns raised by doctors over the normalisation process of the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) exam. In an interview with Education Times, he downplayed apprehensions over conducting the exam in two shifts, reassuring stakeholders that the normalisation process is a widely accepted and reliable process employed to ascertain the All India Rank (AIR). Dr Gangadhar asked candidates to have faith in the process and its reliability.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) had already released a statement. It stated that NEET PG would be conducted in two shifts: one from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and the other from 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm. This announcement gave rise to general apprehensions among candidates across the country, particularly concerns about the equivalence of the normalisation formula. Stakeholders alleged that the normalisation process, which was earlier implemented for NEET PG 2024, was flawed and prone to lapses. Students have demanded the release of the NEET PG answer key along with paper solutions to make the process more transparent.
Most of the candidates who appeared in the second shift of NEET PG 2024 complained that this shift was more difficult than the first shift. They opposed the method of score normalization and called it discriminatory and deceptive. Some candidates also accused NBEMS of managing the exam in a way that favored some candidates. All this has forced the candidates to approach the Supreme Court, demanding improvement and transparency in the process.
Despite the criticism, Dr. Gangadhar affirmed that the normalisation process is in line with global standards and provides a fair assessment for all candidates across different shifts. He assured stakeholders that the process is robust and can effectively address inequalities.
