The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict today, January 8, 2025, on the ongoing petitions related to NEET PG 2024 counselling. The hearing, initially scheduled for January 7, was delayed as the bench of Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih was still engaged in another proceeding. Petitioners have been instructed to present the matter today.
The petitioners sought greater transparency in the NEET PG 2024 examination process, demanding the disclosure of answer keys and question papers. While hearing the plea, the Supreme Court clarified that it would not order fresh counselling if the process had already concluded. Counsel for the authorities confirmed that the third round of counselling had finished on January 4, 2025.
In light of this, “the Court remarked that the matter would be disposed of if counselling was over, and no fresh counselling would be ordered. Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde had earlier raised concerns about the third round of counselling, urging an immediate hearing.“
The petition challenges the National Board of Examinations (NBE) practices, particularly the lack of transparency regarding the NEET PG exam results. It questions the NBE’s decision not to release key examination materials, including question papers, answer keys or response sheets, leaving students without a way to verify their performance. The absence of detailed results, including the number of correctly and incorrectly answered questions, has been a key point of contention.
Today’s Potential Outcomes
On January 8, the Supreme Court bench reaffirmed that no fresh counselling would be ordered for NEET PG 2024. If a final order is issued , it will address whether:
- Any reforms or adjustments will be made to the ongoing counselling process.
- Transparency concerns regarding the NEET PG 2024 examination will lead to systemic changes in future exams.
The petitioners argue that the introduction of a new normalisation method, a change in the tie-breaker criteria and the move to conduct the exam in two shifts led to unfair treatment of candidates, undermining the integrity of the process. The NEET PG 2024 was held on August 11, 2024, and has faced significant criticism, with candidates alleging the exam’s conduct violated transparency principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
The Supreme Court had previously expressed concern over these last-minute changes during the examination and questioned the National Board of Examinations in the September 20 hearing.
