Kota, Rajasthan: A 24-year-old NEET aspirant from Gujarat allegedly died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, on Wednesday. This marks the fifth reported case this year from Kota, a major coaching hub for NEET and JEE aspirants.
Ashfa Sheikh, a 24-year-old NEET aspirant from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was found dead in her paying guest accommodation in Jawahar Nagar around 10 a.m. She had made multiple attempts at the medical entrance exam but had not been successful. Although she had previously taken coaching, she was self-studying at the time of her death. The police did not find a suicide note in her room and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Just two hours later, an 18-year-old JEE aspirant from Guwahati, Assam, was found dead in his hostel room in Mahaveer Nagar. The student, who was preparing to appear for the JEE-Mains exam next week, reportedly used an iron angle to hang himself, despite the hostel being equipped with anti-suicide devices.
6 Suicides in Kota in the First 22 Days of 2025
This year began on a tragic note for Kota, with six student suicides reported within just 22 days. Among the victims were four JEE aspirants:
- On January 18, 16-year-old Manan Jain ended his life at his parents’ home in Bundi.
- On January 16, Abhijeet Giri, a student from Odisha, was found dead in his hostel room in Ambedkar Colony.
- On January 8, Abhishek, a 20-year-old student from Madhya Pradesh, died by suicide in his paying guest accommodation.
- On January 7, Neeraj from Haryana was discovered dead in his hostel room.
NEET and JEE Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Kota: 2024 Statistics
In 2024, Kota witnessed a grim tally of student suicides among NEET and JEE aspirants. According to official data:
- A total of 42 students preparing for competitive exams ended their lives in Kota last year.
- This marks one of the highest annual figures in recent years, raising concerns about the mental health and pressure faced by students in the city.
