Makerere University in Uganda is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the country. It started as a technical school in 1922 and became an independent public university in 1970. Makerere University has nine colleges and one school, serving about 36,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 postgraduate students.
Over the years, Makerere University Uganda expanded its scope and evolved into a Center for Higher Education in East Africa by 1935. In 1937, the College began transforming into a fully-fledged institution of higher education, providing post-school certificate courses.
