NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court refused to hear a PIL for conducting the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) examination twice a year in multiple shifts similar to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering. The High Court Bench noted that such a decision lies exclusively within the administrative domain of the concerned authorities.
“NEET UG exam is conducted by the NTA for selecting students to study medicine in various medical colleges. The JEE is held for selecting students in engineering courses. As to whether any particular entrance exam for admitting students to any particular course is to be held twice in a year lies exclusively in the administrative domain of the authorities concerned. Accordingly, it is for the authorities to consider such a prayer of request,” the High Court Bench noted.
The public interest litigation was moved by one Anshul Gupta, a teacher in a coaching institute. The Court asked Mr. Gupta to move a representation before the competent authority.
The petitioner said the JEE (Mains) examination was conducted in multiple shifts and several chances were given to students to reduce psychological pressure. However, those appearing in NEET UG were given just a single chance.
They should also get more than once chance, added the plea. The bench observed there were several other competitive examinations in which candidates did not have multiple chances.
